With the departure of Tony Richardson, the new York Jets are counting on second year FB John Conner to jump into the starting lineup this season.
Suffering a sprained right ankle during the preseason didn’t help things.
However, going through team drills during Wednesday’s practice, Conner expects to play in Sunday’s season opener with the Dallas Cowboys.
“I expect John to play,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said.
“He may be limited a little bit, but I expect him back. He looked good today. I know (running backs coach Anthony) Lynn was working with our tailbacks today, so then we had him getting extra work with our strength and conditioning coach, and then we put him through team drills as well, so I expect John to play.”
As for Conner, he says the ankle is not a concern and he’s ready to go.
As for the Cowboys, starting cornerback Terence Newman didn’t practice Wednesday and is likely out due to a groin problem. on the other side, cornerback Mike Jenkins is day to day with a knee injury. Starting right tackle Tyron Smith is also day to day with a knee injury.
