UCF signed 19 players Wednesday, including 14 high school prospects, three gray shirts and two transfers.
The most high-profile signee is Missouri transfer Tyler Gabbert, younger brother of Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blaine Gabbert. with two-year starter Jeff Godfrey transferring after the 2011 season, UCF was in the hunt for several quarterbacks. The position became even more important when Jonathan Wallace, a dual-threat quarterback from Phenix City, Ala., switched his commitment from UCF to Auburn on Wednesday.
UCF filled two other areas of need with four offensive linemen and three wide receivers, including Dareen Owi, Miami Norland’s 6-3 wideout. Owi might have been under-recruited in Norland’s run-first offense, said Brandon Helwig, who runs UCFSports.com, but UCF coaches are excited about Owi’s athleticism.
Helwig said this year’s class is not as flashy as last year’s, when the Knights hauled in several four-star recruits, but coach George O’Leary is accustomed to working with players who have flown under the radar.
Coach Skip Holtz had high praise for the 20 players who comprise his third recruiting class.
“I think it is probably the most talented freshman class we’ve signed since I’ve been here,” Holtz told GoUSFBulls.com. “every one of these guys we’ve signed I feel really good about.”
The Bulls’ best haul was a pair of highly recruited pass catchers in wide receivers D’Vario Montgomery and tight end Sean Price.
USF also added four offensive linemen, highlighted by Northeast High’s Kameron Davis. A 6-6, 280-pound tackle, Davis has the chance to compete for early playing time with the graduation of two multiyear starters on the offensive line.
In addition to 11 current high schoolers, USF signed five junior college transfers.
