MOBILE, Alabama — Forty-five years after its light was extinguished, Middle Bay Lighthouse is looking good.

That was the basic assessment of the Alabama Historical Commission’s annual inspection of the structure, after a $270,000 restoration project that began in 2010.

Commission architect Mae Washington inspected improvements and replacements to the 1885 lighthouse in mid-July. The restoration project was managed by Pensacola-based STOA Architects.

according to STOA project manager Kim Hardin, the work done included structural repairs, above-water stainless steel tie rods, replacement of deteriorated windows and a complete exterior painting with a linseed oil-based paint, for a greater seal against rot.

The restoration occurred after the historical commission — the lighthouse’s owner since 1977 — voted to keep the hexagonal, “screw pile” building standing at its original location in Mobile Bay, instead of moving it for display at Battleship Park on the Causeway. that decision was made in December 2009.

“The house looks really, really good,” said Bill Lees, president of the Alabama Lighthouse Association, which helps with upkeep on Middle Bay Lighthouse. “Everything is shining, (and) the paint looks good.”

Lees said the only thing left to do is replace the structure’s wrought-iron handrails, at an estimated cost of $30,000.

“once we get those replaced, I don’t see much of an ongoing maintenance problem for the next couple of years,” he said.

All involved hope that’s the case, as the Alabama Historical Commission currently has no budget funds specifically set aside for Middle Bay Lighthouse in the next budget period. The fiscal year begins Oct. 1, according to Mark Driscoll, director of the commission’s Historic Sites division.

he said the commission pledged an estimated $30,000 annually for maintenance and other projects, to begin in the upcoming fiscal year. but because of state budget cuts, no amount has yet been identified to go solely toward Middle Bay.

“that would be our longer-term goal,” Driscoll said regarding a budget for the lighthouse. “The way the state budget is currently, it’s just not possible at the moment.”

for now, maintenance and inspection costs will come out of the Historic Sites division’s budget, which he expects to be set somewhere near this year’s amount of $372,184 — most of which goes toward personnel.

There’s already one expenditure pending, after last month’s inspection, Driscoll said.

Sometime recently, after the installation of 10 replacement windows made of accoya softwood and Lexan Plexiglas, vandals kicked out an entire panel, including window and frame.

According to Marie Bidney, executive director of the Alabama Lighthouse Association, the vandals “didn’t just break it, they kicked the whole window out.”

Bidney said there was no indication that the vandals entered the lighthouse, but that repairs need to happen soon because of exposure to the interior to rain and wind.

An estimation of that repair is under way, although no other details were available, Driscoll said.

Repairs aside, those charged with its care say Middle Bay Lighthouse looks better than it has in decades. and though its original position is still its current one, the debate to move the lighthouse onto land isn’t over, according to Bill Lees.

“You’ve got a structure that was put in place in 1885. It’s been a wonderful building, but how long can it hold up in that environment?” Lees said.

At some point, when more funding is available, he said he’d like to “make it a really nice tourist attraction along the Causeway.”

“if it’s in the middle of Mobile Bay, you’re at the whim of Mother Nature a lot more so than if you were onshore,” he said. “and it’s a lot cheaper too.”

Student involvement in campus ministries will make a difference in students’ college career, said Eddie Gilley, BCM director at UF since 2002.

“BCM provides an accessible group to provide encouragement, support, friendship, and fellowship with other believers who share a common set of beliefs, practices, faith, and doctrine,” Gilley said.

Tony Olesky, who has served as a BCM director in Pensacola for 25 years, explained that through BCM, students can provide a Christian witness on campus, adding that every college campus is truly a mission field. 

BCM provides a full-time director who is a “trained pastoral leader on the campus to provide greater counsel and development opportunities,” said Gilley. “we are ready to help in any situation.” 

Unlike many Christian organizations on campus, Florida’s BCM directors also encourage students to get involved in local churches for additional spiritual guidance.

Collegiate ministry switches into overdrive for start of new school year – Florida Baptist Witness

New Orleans may see six to 12 inches of rain, and is gearing up to be one of the worse blows to hit the city since Katrina. Weather Channel meteorologist Jim Cantore reports.

Updated at 2 a.m. ET: Unprotected, low-lying areas outside New Orleans were evacuated Monday as Tropical Storm Isaac grew closer to becoming a hurricane that could make landfall in or near Louisiana almost seven years to the day after Hurricane Katrina struck.

“All preparations to protect life and property should be completed tonight,” said Ed Rappaport of the National Hurricane Center in his 8 p.m. ET Monday update. he emphasized that water from rain and storm surge would be the biggest threat — 6 to 18 inches of rain are expected.

Isaac’s wind speed increased to 70 mph, just 4 mph short of a hurricane, the National Hurricane Center said in a late afternoon update. It also forecast Isaac would reach Category 2 status with 100 mph winds late Tuesday night. That’s a stronger Isaac than was forecast earlier Monday. 

In areas near New Orleans, mandatory evacuations were ordered Monday morning for ”our low-lying areas — those outside the hurricane protection system — such as Lafitte, Crown Point, Barataria and Grand Isle,” Jefferson Parish President John Young told TODAY. 

Plaquemines Parish, which stretches 60 miles out into the Gulf, also issued a mandatory evacuation order for its 7,000 residents on its east bank starting at noon Monday.

“We’re telling them to get out,” Parish President bill Nungesser told MSNBC. “We’re going to get hit first and we’re going to take the worst beating of this storm. So people are heading up the highway now.”

“In our parish there’s one road in and one road out,” he added, “and it’s steady traffic flowing out the parish as we speak.”

Isaac is expected to be the first major test of a $14 billion makeover of the system that failed the city so disastrously in 2005. NBC’s Lester Holt reports.

Parts of Lafourche, St. Charles, St. John parishes saw mandatory evacuations as well.

The governors of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi declared states of emergency as a hurricane warning went into effect for a 300-mile swath that extended into Florida. the warning area was later narrowed to between Morgan City, La., and the Alabama-Florida border.  President Barack Obama approved Louisiana’s request for federal disaster declaration, Governor Bobby Jindal said. the approval makes federal funds available for disaster recovery activities like clearing debris, Reuters reported.

“Tonight is when the conditions will start to go downhill” ahead of landfall by Tuesday night, National Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb said in a morning update.

Isaac will probably move slowly inland, possibly dumping as much as 18 inches of rain in places, Knabb said.

“That’s going to be the big problem,” NBC meteorologist Al Roker said on TODAY. “We’re talking about potentially 24 hours of hurricane force winds and heavy rain.”

“Storm surge is going to be a big, big problem,” he added. “Six to twelve feet above normal as you get to New Orleans. Panama City is about four to seven feet.”

The hurricane warning area includes New Orleans, which was devastated when Hurricane Katrina swept over the city on August 29, 2005, killing more than 1,800 people and causing billions of dollars of damage along the coast. a hurricane hasn’t hit the Gulf Coast since Ike in 2008.

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said at a briefing Monday that schools and City Hall had closed and that the city’s defense network of levees and pumps was ready.

NBC’s Lester Holt reports from New Orleans, La., where residents and visitors are prepping for Tropical Storm Isaac  as it threatens to strengthen into a hurricane before landfall.

“All pumps are operational,” he said. “We are well prepared to go.” 

Landrieu earlier noted the irony of Isaac’s arrival. “The timing, as fate would have it, on the anniversary of Katrina has everybody in a state of alertness, but that is a good thing,” he said.

If Isaac makes landfall a bit west of New Orleans, that puts the city in the northeast quadrant of the storm, Roker noted, “and that’s the worst place” for storm impact.

With tropical storm force winds that extend 205 miles from its center, Isaac is an unusually wide storm. 

“Impacts will be far to the east and to the west of where it comes ashore,” Craig Fugate, head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told TODAY.

Robert Latham, the director of Mississippi’s emergency management agency, urged residents to prepare for the storm’s possible arrival.

“This is important to remember, this is a huge storm,” he said. “I don’t have to tell you what a storm like that can do.”

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley ordered mandatory evacuations beginning on Monday for residents in low-lying areas along the coast.

Oil companies earlier evacuated workers and cut production at Gulf offshore rigs.

Weather.com reported that areas as far west as extreme southeast Texas should continue to monitor Isaac’s progress in case a farther west track materializes.

Some Gulf residents started stocking up on supplies and securing their homes. in New Orleans, long lines formed at some gas stations and in Gulfport, Miss., people crowded supermarkets to buy bottled water and canned food.

On Sunday, the storm lashed the Florida Keys and Miami area with wind and rain. Monday morning, some 80,000 south Florida homes and businesses were without electricity due to downed trees that fell on power lines.

The hurricane warning area includes “quite a few oil rigs,” said National Hurricane Center meteorologist Jessica Schauer, but perhaps not the heart of the U.S. offshore oil patch, which produces about 23 percent of U.S. oil output and 7 percent of its natural gas. 

Once ashore, the storm could wreak havoc on low-lying fuel refineries along the Gulf Coast that account for about 40 percent of U.S. refining capacity.

That could send gasoline prices spiking just ahead of the Labor Day holiday, analysts told Reuters. “It’s going right in the heart of refinery row,” Phil Flynn, an analyst with Price Futures Group in Chicago, said Sunday.

Isaac’s westward track meant the worst of its weather missed Tampa, where the Republican National Convention was to open its four-day meeting on Monday — but official events were delayed until Tuesday because of the storm.

Tampa and much of Florida’s west coast and panhandle saw bands of heavy rain on Tuesday morning.

“There’s an isolated tornado threat in central Florida up through the northeastern Gulf area,” Knabb said. “Just because the center is out in the Gulf don’t think that in Florida there aren’t some hazards.”

Several Republican governors from Gulf states have altered their plans for the GOP convention. Alabama’s Gov. Bentley and Louisiana’s Gov. Jindal canceled their trips to Tampa. Florida Gov. Rick Scott gave up a chance to speak. 

NBC’s Chuck Todd reports from Tampa, Fla., where delays at the Republican National Convention due to Tropical Storm Isaac are set to disrupt the lead-up to Mitt Romney’s acceptance of the Republican nomination for president.

U.S. grain elevators on the Gulf coast were shut and barges carrying grain and other goods on the lower Mississippi River were halted in preparation for the storm. Archer Daniels Midland closed four elevators in New Orleans, while Cargill said elevators in Westwego and Reserve, Louisiana, will be closed.

“We have activated our hurricane readiness plan and are taking precautions to ensure the safety of our employees and their families, as well as the security of our assets in the New Orleans area,” ADM spokeswoman Jackie Anderson said.

The Mississippi River is a major channel for the movement of grain produced in the Midwest farm belt to export terminals at the Gulf of Mexico for shipment across the world.

“The safety of our employees is the top priority,” Cargill told Reuters.

In south Florida, winds from Isaac forced cancellations of hundreds of flights in and out of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and other south Florida airports on Sunday.

Isaac is also affecting cruises around Florida and the Caribbean, according to Cruise Critic, a website that covers the industry. Cruise lines have kept ships at sea, altered itineraries and delayed departures of upcoming sailings, Cruise Critic reported.

Isaac moved into the Gulf of Mexico after spending several days sweeping across the Caribbean.

In Haiti, Isaac added to the misery of more than 350,000 survivors of the 2010 earthquake still living in flimsy resettlement camps as water gushed into tents and corrugated plastic shacks were ripped apart by the wind.

Authorities in the impoverished nation said the storm had killed eight people, including three children.

In the Dominican Republic, officials said three people were missing, and confirmed the death of the mayor of a town near Santo Domingo, who was swept away as he tried to save another person from a flooded river.

No deaths or injuries were reported in Cuba, which got off lightly when the storm crossed its eastern flank instead of raking up the length of the island as originally predicted.

Communities from new Orleans to Pensacola are being put on high alert for a direct landfall from future Category 2 Hurricane Isaac around Tuesday night.

Residents, including those in Gulfport, Miss., and Mobile, Ala., should start making preparations now for Isaac's arrival.

Ironically, Isaac is expected to threaten lives and property along the northern Gulf Coast seven years to the date of Hurricane Katrina's devastating landfall.

even those living and vacationing westward to Houston, Texas, should monitor Isaac's progress. Isaac tracking more toward the northwestern Gulf of Mexico cannot be ruled out and all depends on whether Isaac interacts with a cold front pushing toward the Northeast.

While currently a tropical storm, Isaac is a storm that should not be taken lightly.

as the AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center has been calling for since last Thursday, Isaac is expected to slam into the northern Gulf Coast around Tuesday night as a Category 2 hurricane (with maximum sustained winds between 96 and 110 mph).

There is concern that if Isaac tracks more westward toward new Orleans, La., than Pensacola, Fla.–essentially spending more time over water–the storm could become a major hurricane (Category 3 or higher) prior to landfall.

Whether a powerful Category 2 or 3 hurricane, Isaac will pound those in its path with destructive winds, widespread flooding rain and isolated tornadoes.

the strongest winds in Category 2 hurricanes can cause well-constructed framed homes to sustain significant roof and siding damage. Widespread tree damage is likely, leading to potentially lengthy power outages.

Conditions only worsen in a Category 3 hurricane. Most trees will not be able to withstand the strength of these winds, which threaten to cause more substantial structural roof damage on well-built homes.

in both cases, loose lawn items will easily become flying and potentially deadly or damaging projectiles.

a significant storm surge between 6 and 12 feet would also evolve near and east of Isaac's landfall point, leading to coastal flooding and beach erosion.

a track onto the Mississippi coast would spell severe trouble for both new Orleans and Mobile in terms of storm surge. Winds circulating around Isaac would funnel water from the Gulf of Mexico directly into Mobile, via Mobile Bay.

even though new Orleans will lie west of Isaac's path given this scenario, such a track could still cause water from Lake Pontchartrain to put severe stress on the city's levee system.

Winds will initially drive water from the Gulf into Lake Pontchartrain as Isaac approaches, then will push that water back toward new Orleans as the storm tracks north of the city.

Those at risk of taking a direct hit by Isaac should closely monitor the progress of the storm and heed all evacuation orders.

Residents are urged to spend the rest of the weekend and Monday completing the necessary storm preparations ahead of Isaac and review evacuation plans.

Officials may be forced to evacuate more oil rigs across the north-central Gulf of Mexico. Current indications point toward waves of 20 to 30 feet (or higher) building in this region of the Gulf as Isaac gains strength and approaches the coast.

the dangers of Isaac will not end when the storm makes its final landfall. Flooding rain and isolated tornadoes will continue to accompany Isaac inland through the South.

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) – The City of Pensacola said it will suspend non-essential operations on Tuesday ahead of Tropical Storm Isaac’s projected landfall.

Officials said all city facilities, including City Hall, City of Pensacola neighborhood resource centers, West Florida Public Library branches, and all other city offices will close on August 28.

Sanitation collection on Tuesday is suspended as well. Garbage, recycling and yard trash collections will be delayed until Wednesday. Special pick-ups will also be suspended.

City sanitation customers normally scheduled for Tuesday collection should not place garbage and recycling containers at curbside until tropical storm force winds have passed and collection can resume on Wednesday.

The projected collection schedule is subject to change depending on the projected path of the storm.

Pensacola and Escambia County remain under a Hurricane Warning, with hurricane conditions expected within the next 48 hours. The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners declared a Local State of Emergency on Sunday.

Escambia County has also issued an order of evacuation for Zones a, B and C.

That area includes most of Downtown Pensacola south of Garden Street as well as portions of the Sanders Beach neighborhood.  Officials have set up an address look-up tool for citizens to confirm whether or not they are in an evacuation zone.

The Escambia County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and the Citizen Information Center have both been activated. Residents may call (850) 471-6600 for up-to-the-minute information.

Pensacola International Airport (PNS) remains open but, due to inclement weather statewide, the airport is experiencing flight cancellations.

PNS recommends passengers contact their air carrier for flight information. Phone numbers for airlines can be found on the PNS website.

Edith Allen Goodrich, 93, Bidwell, Ohio, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2012, in Abbyshire place, Bidwell. Born June 21, 1919, to the late Richard and Mary Alice (Baumann) Allen at Springfield Center, N.Y., she earned her B.A. in Secondary Education from Cornell University and later earned her Master’s Degree. As an educator for more than 37 years, she was the head of the English Department in the Royal Oak, Michigan School District. she was a member of the Michigan Retired Teachers Association; the Sunshine Girls of Milton, Fla.; the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Pensacola, Fla.; attended Grace United Methodist Church, Gallipolis, Ohio, and enjoyed quilting and spending time with her family.

Edith is survived by sons, Daniel (Denise) Goodrich, Bidwell, Ohio, and David (Mary) Goodrich, Wichita Falls, Texas; grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher and Daniel Goodrich and Kelli, Michael and Danielle Goodrich; great-grandchildren, Elrik, Reanna and Chasen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Goodrich; brothers, George and David Allen and sisters, Florence Cash and Olivet Allen.

A memorial service will be conducted 6 p.m., Monday, August 27, 2012, in the McCoy-Moore Funeral Home, Wetherholt Chapel, Gallipolis, with Rev. bill Thomas officiating. A gathering of friends will be held at the funeral home from 4-6 p.m., Monday.

No appointment is necessary. the clinic is open to student athletes, ages five and up, active in any sport.

Students may check-in from 8-10 a.m. in the Andrews Institute Rehabilitation center, Suite 101, on the Andrews Institute campus, 1040 Gulf Breeze Pkwy., Gulf Breeze, Fla. Exams are performed by an orthopaedic physician and a certified athletic trainer and are provided on a walk-in basis. the initial assessment is performed free of charge.

If an injury is assumed, the athlete may undergo a round of diagnostic imaging such as an X-ray to further diagnose their condition. Once a diagnosis is made, they may be referred to another physician for further exams or testing to assess the need for rehabilitation and/or surgery. the additional testing would be billed to their insurance.
